The Songkran Festival will be happening all weekend long, from 13-15 April 2019! Songkran celebrates the Thai New Year, ushering in the year 2562 of the Thai calendar this weekend.

Locals and tourists alike celebrate the holiday with exciting water festivals, where people head to the streets to cool off the Thai weather with buckets of water thrown over their head. Throwing water symbolises good fortune and respect, while also washing away bad luck.

Whether this is an annual event or the first-time you’re celebrating Songkran, this guide will bring you through when, where and how to celebrate Songkran!

Where is Songkran?

The biggest events celebrating in Bangkok this year will be in Khao San and Silom Road. In preparation of the King’s coronation happening in May, celebrations in Bangkok’s Khao San will be minimised to allow preparation. However, if you’d like to head to a bigger party, Silom Road is just 26 minutes south of Khao San!

Chiang Mai also sees one of the biggest Songkran festivals, with locals and tourists pouring in around Tha Pae Gate to celebrate the new year.

It’s easy to be carried away with water splashing from every direction. However, it’s important to stay mindful of these tips while celebrating Songkran:

Pack light

Unless there’s a locker nearby, only bring your essentials with you! Keep them in a waterproof bag so water won’t seep through easily.

Plan your transport arrangements in time

Roads in Bangkok and Chiang Mai may be closed to allow the festival to run, so plan ahead! Take one of our Neuron scooters and scoot your way to the festival early to avoid getting splashed in the middle of your journey!

Be aware of your surroundings

Whether you’re celebrating in Chiang Mai or Bangkok, it’s important to be aware of what is being thrown around you and where you’re standing. The ground becomes slippery and it can pull an unfortunate end to a joyous occasion.

Be careful of who you’re throwing water at

Avoid throwing water at the elderly, young children and those riding on motorcycles. These situations can end up in unnecessary injuries.
