Neuron launches third Helmet Safety Awareness Week with national road safety partners!

Our road safety partners share their top reasons for helmet use and why they are the single most important way for riders to protect themselves

We are launching our third-annual Helmet Safety Awareness Week on Monday 18 September in partnership with Australian Road Safety Foundation (ARSF), Traffic Injury Research Foundation (TIRF) in Canada, Brake New Zealand and the Royal Society for the Prevention of Accidents (RoSPA) in the UK.

Safety is a cornerstone of Neuron’s business and with international research showing that 28% of e-scooter injuries occur to the head or neck, Neuron and their partners are calling for all riders to remember to put on a helmet. During the campaign there will be extra education initiatives and incentives that can help to increase helmet awareness and use.

Here are the top five compelling reasons to wear a helmet:

  1. Enhancing Personal Safety: Wearing a helmet significantly reduces the risk of sustaining a severe injury by an impressive 70%. It acts as your reliable safeguard, offering crucial protection in the event of an unforeseen accident.
  2. Legal Compliance and Financial Savings: Embracing helmets isn’t just a personal choice; in many cities around the world it’s also a legal requirement. By wearing a helmet, you not only follow the law but also avoid heavy fines, ensuring journeys remain safe, legal and also budget-friendly.
  3. Increased Visibility for All: Beyond personal safety, helmets serve as a means of increasing your visibility on the road. Bright helmets ensure that you’re noticed by fellow commuters, contributing to safer shared spaces.
  4. Protection from the Weather: Helmets are not just for impact protection; they also shield you from the elements. Whether it’s rain, wind, or harsh sunlight, your helmet acts as a reliable barrier, making your rides comfortable regardless of the weather.
  5. Leading by Example: As a responsible road user, you hold the power to set a positive precedent for others. By donning your helmet, you inspire a culture of safety-conscious behaviour, making streets safer for everyone.

In 2020 Neuron launched the world’s first app-controlled Helmet Lock which integrates a helmet to every e-scooter and e-bike. Riders are encouraged to take an in-app ‘Helmet Selfie’ before their trip and earn free credits as well as visit our online ScootSafe Academy for more incentives by completing city-specific training content.

Neuron launches its latest Impact Report to highlight the positive impact on the community!

Read full report here

We are thrilled to launch our latest Impact Report which shows how we are driving positive change in the communities we operate in. The report also outlines our progress in becoming Carbon Negative by 2025 while quantifying the economic benefits of e-scooters and how Neuron is reducing mobility barriers for all.

We clocked over 9 million trips in 2022 with 45% of all trips replacing a car journey, eliminating 1,205 metric tonnes of CO2. We also conducted an in-depth analysis of our Scope 1, 2 and 3 emissions in 2021 to create a baseline for future measurements. In a first for the industry, we also designed and manufactured our latest e-scooter, the all-new N4 e-scooter, with 80% recycled aluminium.

For the first time, we quantified the significant economic contribution our operations are making in the cities we serve. Globally, seven in 10 Neuron trips resulted in a purchase at a local business, and in Australia, this translated to each e-scooter contributing a massive spending of $70,000 each year.

To create meaningful employment opportunities for people from a diverse range of backgrounds, Neuron worked closely with non-profit organisations including Workskil Australia, Recovery Your Way and Killara Foundation among others.

Providing a new perspective on e-scooter riders, we highlighted how 5% of Neuron users have a disability or mobility impairment. More riders are also benefiting from heavily discounted or free concession passes as we continue to bring Neuron Access, our global equity and accessibility programme, to more parts of the world.

Safety is at the heart of everything we do. We launched our online riding school, ScootSafe Academy, to gamify rider education and deliver refresher training for those who break the rules. We delivered a range of safety initiatives including our annual Global Road Safety Week, where we teamed up with our national road safety partners and leading sight-loss charities to create a series of rider education materials to promote “Safer Streets for All”.

Neuron analyses rider demographics to enhance adoption and safety!

Once thought of as just “boys’ toys”, e-scooters are now widely-adopted by all genders as a mainstream transport option

Today we launch our latest report, Bridging the E-scooter Gender Gap: Enhancing Adoption and Safety, which analyses how the adoption, usage and perception of e-scooters differ between men and women. The research provides valuable insights into how cities can make safer and more inclusive micromobility programmes for all.

According to survey data, a gender gap exists across our markets with a split of 59% male and 40% female riders. However, significant advancements in e-scooter design and regulation in recent years have meant that e-scooters are no longer regarded as just “boys’ toys”. In fact, a higher proportion of younger women (16 – 34 years) worldwide are now actively choosing to ride e-scooters compared to their male counterparts (60% vs 52%).

Various factors have contributed to the gender gap including the stark differences in risk tolerance, with female riders prioritising safety to a greater extent, as opposed to males who valued speed and handling. Early adoption of private e-scooters was predominantly led by younger men, and this accelerated their uptake of rental e-scooters which are now seen in many cities worldwide.

City infrastructure is reported to play a crucial role in e-scooter adoption rates. When asked what would significantly improve ridership, 73% called for cities to provide more protected lanes while 89% would like more parking stations with physical identifiers like painted bays. Males were also found to favour the provision of infrastructure which improved access and connectivity, while females wanted better riding conditions.

Increasingly cities, as well as riders, are recognising that rental e-scooters provide an important transport service for the night time economy. Hospitality and healthcare workers turn to e-scooters for their affordability compared to taxis and ride-hailing services, while some women felt safer travelling on an e-scooter alone at night compared to walking or public transport.

It’s clear more women than ever before are seeing e-scooters as a great way to travel. As we deepdive into Neuron’s data and research, the report offers key recommendations for policymakers, urban planners, city transport teams and e-scooter service providers to foster a more inclusive and safer e-scooter ecosystem for all.

Neuron renews commitment to promote safer streets for all this UN Road Safety Week!

Road safety is a shared responsibility and we are incentivising all riders to refresh their knowledge on e-scooter safety

We are marking UN Road Safety Week 2023 from 15-21 May by renewing our commitment for the third year to promote “Safer Streets for All”. This year’s campaign will build on our continued efforts to highlight how riding and parking responsibly can help improve safety outcomes for different members of our communities.

During UN Road Safety Week, riders who have already redeemed free credits for completing the Parking Whiz Quiz on Neuron’s online ScootSafe Academy will be able to do so again, effectively doubling their incentives earned. We hope this serves as an important reminder for all riders to keep their city’s streets safe and tidy. Our friendly Safety Ambassadors will also be at in-person ScootSafe events to equip riders with the confidence to ride and park safely.

We’ve consulted with Blind Citizens Australia (BCA), the Royal National Institute of Blind People (RNIB), Thomas Pocklington Trust and our national road safety partners to co-create a range of education materials. This includes light-hearted videos, albeit with serious messages, to encourage riders to be considerate of pedestrians, especially the visually impaired, those with guide dogs, wheelchair users and the elderly.

Neuron supports the 2023 UN Road Safety Week theme, #RethinkMobility, and is encouraging riders to ditch their car in order to reduce congestion and emissions across the world. We believe improving safety outcomes for our riders and all pedestrians is an important prerequisite to supporting this modal shift.

The all-new N4: Neuron unveils the most rider-centric, sustainable and toughest e-scooter yet!

Designed in-house to deliver unparalleled comfort and stability, the N4 promises a smoother, faster and more predictable acceleration, and best-in-class hill climbing ability

Ergonomically designed and precisely tuned to win riders

The N4 has been precisely tuned to deliver a more linear acceleration profile which allows the e-scooter to reach its top speed faster in a smoother, more predictable manner, giving the rider added confidence. It has been engineered to deliver best-in-class hill climbing performance, dynamically delivering power exactly when it is needed.

When competitor vehicles fail, the N4 can comfortably climb a 17 degree incline carrying a rider of 90kg/198 lbs. Plus we have added an upgraded front suspension and pneumatic tyres to significantly reduce road vibration and enhance comfort and traction.

The N4 carries over well-known safety features from our N3 model including the world’s first App-controlled Helmet Lock, launched in 2020, which integrates a helmet to the e-scooter and our “talking e-scooter” voice guidance system which was introduced in 2018 to inform and educate riders.

Tougher and more durable, with dual-battery system for better unit economics

Having undergone rigorous crash and stress testing, the N4 has been designed to be extremely durable and economical to operate. The deck and frame of the N4 is made from a single die-cast piece of aluminium and is fitted with rubber bumper strips along each side to protect it from wear and tear.

We introduced the world’s first swappable batteries for rental e-scooters in 2018 and our N4 e-scooter goes one step further with a new sequential, dual-battery system which can be deployed with one or two batteries depending on the demand in the city or to manage peak periods. Having two batteries reduces charging time by around 50%, compared to using a single battery of the same combined capacity, significantly boosting operational efficiency.

Premium, white-label model offered to operators and fleet owners

We are excited to announce that we will offer a premium, white-label N4 model to operators and fleet owners. The N4 has been designed and built to meet the demands of modern cities with regulated e-scooter programmes, and for operators to win competitive city tenders. It is fully certified and compliant with major markets in Europe, North America and Asia Pacific.

In an industry first, the frame and body of the N4 is constructed using certified 80% recycled aluminium, which significantly reduces the manufacturing footprint of the vehicle.

The N4 comes with a proprietary new IoT box which is future-proofed to allow technology to be added over time. It has a range of high-tech sensors to precisely locate the e-scooter and control where it can be ridden and parked and to correct irresponsible riding in real-time. Unlike many competitor vehicles the GPS antenna is top-mounted and sky-facing, it sits within the new LED dashboard to achieve superior satellite reception.
