Neuron’s e-scooters clock up over 1.2 million kilometres in Canada!

Service embraced by locals and benefiting cities

As 2021 comes to a close, we are thrilled to announce the completion of our successful first riding season in Canada. Our year end trip data shows exceptional program uptake, with Neuron riders having travelled over 1.2 million kilometers across our cities nationally.

We first entered the Canadian market in May 2021, quickly securing competitive permits in Ottawa, Calgary, Red Deer and Vernon. Since our launch earlier this year, Neuron e-scooters have helped tens of thousands of people get to where they need to be in a safe, convenient and environmentally friendly way.

Our e-scooter rental programs are helping to support local businesses, making measurable contributions to local economic recovery efforts. According to Neuron’s recent rider surveys, 80% of riders used Neuron e-scooters to visit local businesses and to explore cities, while 62% made a purchase from a local vendor during their most recent trip.

Our rider surveys also revealed that e-scooters are getting Canadians out of their cars in large numbers, supporting regional environmental sustainability efforts. Across our Canadian cities, 46% of all Neuron trips replaced a car journey, leading to an estimated 90 tonnes of CO2 emissions avoided this year alone.

Throughout the 2021 riding season safety remained front and centre. We announced several major safety initiatives and new technology innovations and held many #ScootSafe education events across all cities, directly engaging with thousands of people on local riding rules and best practices for e-scooter riding.

Thank you to our city partners and riders for an incredible first season in Canada!

Neuron introduces the world’s most sophisticated e-scooter with global technology trial!

Our distinctive orange e-scooters will be fitted with a new ‘e-scooter brain’ to drive e-scooter safety

We are thrilled to announce the launch of a major global technology trial which will take place over six months and is the first of its kind. Starting today we’ll have the first of 1,500 e-scooters in cities across Australia, Canada and the UK.

Neuron’s safety-first e-scooters will be fitted with a revolutionary new ‘e-scooter brain’ which combines three very important new technologies:

  • High Accuracy Location Technology (HALT) – This allows us to detect an e-scooter’s location to within 10 centimetres, making it at least 50 times more accurate than the average GPS-based location system which plots to around 5-10 metres.
  • Rapid Geofence Detection – This triggers an e-scooter’s response to a geofence in 0.3 seconds (as opposed to the usual 6-12 seconds). Making our e-scooters much more controllable in cities and potentially safer.
  • Dangerous Riding Detection – We are introducing a range of smart sensors to counteract unsafe riding habits in real-time. We’ll also be able to profile riders, giving them an individual safety rating, so we can educate, correct and incentivise good riding behaviour.

The trial’s findings from Ottawa in Canada, Brisbane and Darwin in Australia, and Slough in the UK will determine how selected features will be rolled out across Neuron’s fleet internationally over the next 12 months.

We look forward to further enhancing rider safety and putting Councils back in control of their e-scooter programmes!

Neuron launches inaugural global Helmet Safety Awareness Week!

Neuron launches inaugural global Helmet Safety Awareness Week!

We're giving our riders even more reasons to put on a helmet and protect themselves with prizes and more incentives

Helmet Safety Awareness Week 2021 (1-10 October) is Neuron’s first annual global safety campaign dedicated towards promoting the importance of wearing a helmet. Across all our markets, we’ve teamed up with our national safety partners, Councils and the Police to promote helmet use and safe riding.

During the campaign, you’ll see #ScootSafe events organised across our cities, riders can earn more incentives when they take an in-app ‘Helmet Selfie’ and we’ll also be running a ‘Wear a Helmet Challenge competition on Instagram. Participants with the best photo submission of themselves wearing Neuron’s helmet stand to win free passes.

We’ve also commissioned our own national Helmet Safety Polls during September 2021, with over 7,000 respondents in Australia, New Zealand, the UK and Canada. Nine out of 10 (99% in Australia, 98% in New Zealand, 83% in the UK and 91% in Canada) say it is “important” for e-scooter riders to wear helmets. This is consistent in Korea where 99% of respondents felt that enforcement of helmet use is “necessary” during our earlier poll in May 2021.

Safety is Neuron’s number one priority and with international research showing that 28% of e-scooter injuries occur to the head or neck, we recognise that greater education and incentives to increase helmet use should be the responsibility of every operator.

Helmet Safety Awareness Week is #ScootSafe like you’ve never seen before – so put on your helmets and fasten your straps, cause we’re about to take you for a ride!

Neuron partners with Traffic Injury Research Foundation to lead the way on e-scooter safety in Canada!

Neuron partners with Traffic Injury Research Foundation to lead the way on e-scooter safety in Canada!

We are partnering with the Traffic Injury Research Foundation (TIRF) to promote best practice for rental e-scooter safety across the country.

Safety has always been our top priority and partnering with TIRF will help us further lead the way in rental e-scooter safety. Established as a registered charity, TIRF is an independent road safety research institute that works with governments and stakeholders across Canada to make roads safer and reduce road deaths and injuries. It is a world leader in research, program and policy development, evaluation, and knowledge transfer.

Together we will co-develop campaigns and activities that will promote rider safety in Canada. TIRF will review and provide input on our rider education materials as well as analyse our safety data. Together, we will also co-launch safety campaigns built on these activities.

As a safety-leading e-scooter operator, we’ve introduced an impressive number of innovations to help keep riders safe. These include the world’s first app-controlled helmet lock which secures a helmet to every e-scooter in between trips; topple detection; a 911 emergency button; voice guidance to educate and warn riders on how to ride safely; a ‘Follow my Ride’ function; and we pioneered the use of geofencing technology to control where e-scooters can be ridden and parked, and how fast they can travel.

We look forward to working with TIRF to continue educating e-scooter riders and the wider public, to keep them safe and reduce incidents as much as possible.

Neuron joins The Climate Pledge to achieve net zero target by 2040!

The initiative further supports the sustainability goals of towns and cities across our global operations

We are committing to achieving net zero carbon emissions by 2040 by joining The Climate Pledge, which is co-founded by Amazon and Global Optimism. This announcement builds on our sustainability commitments and certification of global carbon neutral status.

As part of the initiative, we will be regularly measuring and reporting our greenhouse gas emissions as well as implementing a range of decarbonisation strategies. Signatories also commit to neutralising any remaining emissions with offsets to achieve net zero annual carbon emissions by 2040 — a decade earlier than specified by the Paris Agreement.

Across our global operations, our rider surveys revealed that around 45% of journeys made on Neuron e-scooters have directly replaced trips that would otherwise have been made in a car. Since launching in 2016, an estimated 1,500 tonnes of CO2 have been saved from entering the atmosphere.

Our distinctive orange e-scooters are designed and purpose-built for safe and sustainable operations, this includes the world’s first battery swappable e-scooter, introduced in 2018. Their modular design allows them to be upgraded and refurbished throughout their life and last 2-5 times longer than many other e-scooters. At the end of their operational life the parts are reclaimed and recycled.
